About the Attractions

TURKISH BATH

  • The hamam is a public Turkish bath, enjoyed by both locals and tourists looking for a complete relaxation experience and traditional procedures that help maintain health, beauty, and youth. It's also a great way to learn more about Turkey's culture and history, as well as the lives and customs of its people.

How the Tour Proceeds

  • Upon arrival, guests are greeted and escorted to the changing room, where they will receive a bracelet with a locker key, slippers, and a cotton sheet or towel. Personal belongings can be left in the locker.
  • Nudity is completely unacceptable in an Eastern bath. Therefore, women can wrap themselves in a sheet even after changing into swimsuits, and men can tie a towel around their waists.
  • Now, ahead of you are a couple of hours of bliss and relaxation. In the hamam, guests do not wash themselves; trust the experienced hands of the bath attendant who will perform all traditional Turkish bath procedures in the correct sequence.
  • The first room guests visit is the steam room. The steam room traditionally has very high humidity, and the air temperature ranges from +35C to +55C. The thick steam envelops your entire body, relaxing muscles, calming the nervous system, and opening every pore in your skin. As you sweat, harmful toxins and impurities are expelled from your body. You will feel fatigue leave you, replaced by a sense of lightness and tranquility. It is said that the hamam cleanses not only the body but also the soul.
  • In the center of the steam room is a warm marble stone, sometimes called the "belly stone." Why? Because to thoroughly warm up not only the muscles but also the internal organs, it is recommended to lie on the stone on your stomach.
  • After your body and skin are well steamed, the bath attendant will proceed to the next procedure – cleansing.
  • Body peeling is done with a special Turkish glove – a kese.
  • The kese glove is made from natural materials such as silk threads, loofah, rough sheep or camel wool. It resembles a pouch that fits over the hand, and before getting wet, it is quite pleasant to the touch. After soaking, the texture of the glove becomes rougher, perfectly removing hardened, dead skin cells.
  • The next stage is more pleasant – massages: foam and natural oils.
  • Many compare the foam massage to true heavenly delight. This massage relaxes the body and hydrates the skin.
  • The bath attendant dissolves olive soap shavings in hot water and immerses a special cotton bag – the kopuk torbasi – in the solution to whip up the foam, which is then squeezed onto the guest's body, creating a real foam cloud. Skillfully, the bath attendant massages the entire body, paying attention to each muscle.
  • The next stage is nourishing and hydrating the skin with natural essential oils. After this procedure, the skin becomes elastic and glowing.
  • Finally, all guests head to the rest room, where they can enjoy a delicious herbal tea.

When to Visit the Hamam?

  • Cosmetologists recommend visiting the hamam in the early days of your vacation. This makes sense for several reasons.
  • First, the traditional procedures will prepare your skin for sunbathing. A clean, smooth skin will tan more evenly, beautifully, and will also have a more lasting bronze shade.
  • Second, the hamam is not only about hygiene and spa treatments. It is customary to relax, drink tea, and socialize in the Turkish bath, which is exactly what you need after a flight.
  • We recommend not limiting yourself to just the early days of your vacation! Visit the Turkish bath any day you wish. This tour won't take much of your time, just a couple of hours, but the positive emotions, impressions, and well-being will remind you of a pleasant time for a long time.

History of the Hamam

  • The history of the Turkish bath dates back to ancient times. Roman baths are considered the predecessors of the hamam.
  • In ancient times, people could spend almost an entire day in the baths, celebrating events, simply relaxing, women performing various cosmetic procedures, men discussing important and sometimes fateful matters, and political problems.
  • During the Byzantine Empire, in the city of Pergamum, the ruins of which are now located in modern Turkey, the medic Galen lived and worked. He believed that visiting the baths positively affected human health and had a healing effect.
  • The idea of such Roman baths was adopted by the Arabs, modifying it slightly. However, in their version, steam warming was followed by a cool water pour instead of immersion in a water tank, which they considered akin to bathing in one's own dirt.
  • In Arabic, hamam means "distributing heat."

Architecture of the Buildings

  • The hamam has significant differences from other steam baths, primarily in the building's architecture and the interiors of the rooms.
  • In the construction and interior decoration of a hamam, wood is never used, only water-resistant materials like stone, tiles, etc.
  • Traditional Eastern baths consist of several spacious, well-lit rooms, with walls adorned with intricate mosaics and ornaments. The ceilings are high and dome-shaped, sometimes reaching from 3 to 5 meters in height.
  • Interestingly, in the steam room, not only the floor but also the walls, benches, and marble slab are heated. The only part that remains cool is the ceiling, where condensation accumulates and drips down the walls.
  • Traditionally, hamams are built in the shape of an open hand, with five rooms surrounding the main room, each serving different functions and having different air temperatures.
  • Modern hamam buildings usually consist of a dressing room, a steam room with a central marble slab, and a rest room.
  • The rest room, in addition to comfortable sofas and armchairs, may also have a pool and jacuzzi.
  • All the rooms in the bath are heated by one boiler, with thick steam seeping through the walls via special holes.

Essential Hamam Accessories

  • The kese glove – a Turkish exfoliating glove made from natural materials of animal or plant origin, used for peeling after the body is steamed.
  • Pestemal – a lightweight cotton or linen towel that wraps around the body, excellent at absorbing moisture and almost unnoticeable on the skin. Despite the variety of colors, the classic is a red and blue check pattern.
  • Sabun – natural olive soap, handmade, which perfectly moisturizes the skin. It is used after the peeling procedure, suitable for both body and hair washing. Often, other plant-based ingredients are added to improve its properties.
  • Kopuk torbasi – a cotton bag for whipping up foam.
