About the Attractions

Ancient City of Selge and Adam Kayalar

  • According to one version, the ancient city of Selge was founded by Spartans in the 5th century BC. According to another, it was founded by the seer Calchas, who, along with Greek settlers, built the city after the end of the Trojan War.
  • Selge was one of the largest, most developed, and wealthiest cities in Pisidia. Thanks to its fertile soil, the main activities of the locals were gardening and trading the produce they grew and harvested: olives, olive oil, fruits, berries, and medicinal herbs that grew on the slopes surrounding the city.
  • Due to its geographically challenging location, Selge retained its independence for a long time and only became part of the Roman Empire in 25 BC.
  • During the Byzantine Empire, the city began to decline due to shifting trade routes and increasing Arab raids. Earthquakes, which were common at the time, accelerated this process.
  • In the 7th century AD, after another devastating earthquake that almost completely destroyed the city, the once magnificent city became desolate and abandoned.
  • Today, you can see what remains: the ruins of the city walls, watchtowers, the stadium, the remains of the temples of Zeus and Sandon – the god of courage and war.
  • The ancient theater, which could accommodate 10,000 spectators, is very well preserved and is considered the "pearl" and the most significant cultural heritage site of the ancient city of Selge.
  • Not far from the ancient ruins is the area known as Adam Kayalar, sometimes referred to as Antalya's Cappadocia, "rock people," or "devil's stones." This unique natural phenomenon was formed by erosion, giving the rocky wasteland the shape of pillars, many of which rise up to 70 meters above the ground. Scientists agree that their age is over 65 million years. There is also a belief that the rocks of Adam Kayalar have the property of accumulating and retaining water, like cisterns.
  • From a distance, the stone pillars indeed resemble people or warriors standing among centuries-old eucalyptus and cypress trees, either waiting for something or guarding something, possibly the city of Selge itself.

KÖPRÜLÜ CANYON

  • Tourists staying in the resort cities of Turkey such as Antalya, Kemer, Alanya, Belek, and Side head to the Köprülü Canyon National Park near the village of Beşkonak in the Manavgat district, located 125 km from the center of Antalya, for rafting.
  • The Köprülü Canyon National Park was established in 1973 and covers an area of 366,140 hectares. The reserve gets its name from the canyon formed by the Köprüçay River between the villages of Beşkonak and Ballasan. In the Republic of Turkey, Köprülü Canyon is considered the largest. It is 14 km long, and its height reaches 100 meters. In some places, the gorge walls are almost impossible to climb.
  • The Köprüçay River, or Köprü, originates in the Taurus Mountains and, passing through natural canyons, filling with underground waters, flows into the Mediterranean Sea south of the town of Serik. It is 183 kilometers long. Being a full-flowing source with a strong current in both summer and winter, Köprüçay is ideal for rafting and other water sports.
  • It is worth noting that the Köprülü Canyon National Park is one of the most beautiful natural recreation areas in Turkey. It is home to the largest natural cypress forest in the entire Mediterranean region, covering 400 hectares. Its rich fauna includes 48 rare and endangered species. Of these, 44 species are found only here, making them endemic; 5 species are globally endangered; 4 species are nationally endangered; 39 species are threatened in Europe.
  • In the reserve, you can observe the mountain goat and the black salamander, admire the Anatolian vulture and the white-headed vulture soaring in the sky.
  • Many historical and archaeological monuments have been preserved here, such as castles, aqueducts, roads, and ancient bridges. For example, the most famous among tourists is the ancient Roman bridge Oluk, connecting the two parts of Köprülü Canyon. It can be boldly called the entrance and business card of the natural park.
  • To the west of the Köprüçay River, in the mountainous area, are the ruins of the ancient city of Selge, which was founded in the 5th century BC. From the once magnificent city, not much remains now: the ancient theater, agora, cisterns, aqueducts, temples of Zeus and Artemis.

RAFTING

  • Among extreme sports, rafting is considered the most accessible and safe.
  • It involves descending a mountain river on an inflatable raft, overcoming water obstacles, and navigating rapids.
  • Even someone with no experience will feel immense joy, a surge of adrenaline, and a sense of pride for managing to handle the roaring, fast-flowing mountain river almost independently. All that is needed for success is to carefully listen to the safety briefing conducted by the instructor on land and follow all the commands of your experienced guide in the water.
  • All rafting routes in Turkey have a 2nd or sometimes 3rd difficulty level, suitable for both beginners and advanced rafters. The actual time spent on the water is about 2 hours. Active paddling is always alternated with rest on the shore.
  • The ideal time for rafting is from June to September, as even on the hottest days, the water temperature in the river remains 10-12°C.

TAZI CANYON

  • Tazi Canyon is one of the most picturesque attractions in the Republic of Turkey, which is only starting to gain popularity among tourists who prefer a secluded rest away from the city hustle and bustle, and those who love extreme entertainment.
  • Locals call this place "Valley of Wisdom" for a reason – sitting on a huge boulder, you realize how vast our world is and how small a person is in it. The gorge is part of the Köprülü National Park but only became accessible to the public in 2017.
  • The view from the observation deck is breathtaking. Sheer cliffs, 200 to 400 meters high, framed by deciduous and coniferous forests; the Köprüçay River, once a full and turbulent mountain stream, winding below, creating this masterpiece over thousands of years now called Tazi Canyon, with endless valley expanses in the background.
  • Tazi Canyon is located 30 minutes from Köprülü Canyon, and we will visit it first. The name of the cliff translates from Turkish as "Canyon with a Bridge." Here is the famous Oluk Bridge, preserved since ancient times, over which Alexander the Great's army crossed during the campaign against Persia.
  • The excursion is conducted for tourists from all regions of Antalya province and can be combined with rafting. When preparing for the trip, ensure comfortable clothing and shoes, as well as bring drinking water and sun protection.
  • 30-40 minutes of free time is enough to enjoy the beauty of Turkish nature, almost untouched by civilization, take memorable photos, and try the ancient national dish – gözleme – flatbreads made of unleavened dough with various fillings, along with a cup of strong, delicious tea.
