About the Attractions
Paragliding: General Information
- Making your vacation truly unforgettable is easy. Just choose a clear, beautiful day and go paragliding. During your paragliding flight, you will soar through the sky like a bird, experience a powerful adrenaline rush, feel the freedom and lightness, and marvel at the breathtaking views. These completely new, vivid emotions will be remembered for a long time!
- Paragliding is a type of parachute sport where the pilot performs a horizontal flight on a paraglider, an ultra-light and simple aircraft in terms of structure and control. Unlike the swift vertical jumps of parachuting, paragliding descends slowly and smoothly.
- The paraglider's structure is indeed primitive. It consists of a soft elliptical wing, lines, and a harness system. It is controlled by the free ends of the lines.
- In its packed form, the entire structure fits easily into a backpack and can weigh between 5 to 13 kg. To make it flight-ready takes about 5 minutes.
- The first soft wing that allowed for short periods of hovering in the air, which became the prototype for modern hang gliders and paragliders, was invented by American aviation engineer Francis Rogallo in the 1940s.
- However, the father of paragliding is considered to be inventor Steve Snyder, who created the parachute wing. In the mid-1970s, adventurers from France made the first attempts to fly the parachute wing from mountain slopes in the Alps.
- In the 1980s, the wing began to be modified, giving it a more elongated shape.
- Paragliding started to gain mass popularity as a sporting discipline in the 1990s.
- Today, as in the 1970s, flights are launched from an elevation, such as a hill or mountain slope, and are sustained by soaring in ascending air currents. The speed at which the air vehicle can move ranges from 20 to 70 km/h.
- How far can a paraglider fly? In October 2018, Swiss pilot Michel Sigel flew a distance of 551 km, setting a new world record.
- How high can it rise? In July 2021, a French extreme pilot set another world record in Pakistan by flying at an altitude of 8,407 meters above sea level.
Paragliding: Where it Takes Place
- To dive into the world of extreme sports and experience the thrilling sensations of paragliding, guests head to the beautiful city of Alanya.
- Alanya is a resort city located in southwestern Turkey. The Taurus Mountains embrace the city, protecting it from the cold northern winds. It is on these mountain peaks, at altitudes of 500 and 800 meters, that the paragliding launch sites are located.
- During paragliding, soaring above the city at bird's-eye height, you will admire the picturesque panoramic views of the coastline, Alanya itself, and its main historical attractions.
- For example, you will see the famous Cleopatra Beach.
- Cleopatra Beach is one of the most beautiful and popular vacation spots not only in Alanya but in Turkey as a whole. It is surrounded by the Taurus Mountains, covered with pine forests, and stretches for 2.5 km. The shore, covered with golden coarse sand with occasional pebbles, is washed by the emerald waves of the Mediterranean Sea.
- The beach infrastructure is well-developed and thought out to the smallest details, making it comfortable for any guest. Along the coastline, there are cafes, restaurants offering Turkish cuisine, and souvenir shops.
- Since 2004, Cleopatra Beach has been awarded the "Blue Flag" every year as an ecologically clean, safe place!
- But why is the beach named after the Egyptian queen? According to legend, long ago, Cleopatra, tired of a sea voyage, ordered the ship to dock in a small but very picturesque bay. The harbor delighted the eastern beauty so much that it became her favorite vacation spot.
- Another hallmark of the city, which you will see during your flight, is the medieval fortress built on a rocky peninsula rising 250 meters above the sea. Its construction began in 1226 under Sultan Ala ad-Din Kay-Kubad I.
- The fortress protected the city from three sides. A 6-kilometer wall encircles the mountain, and behind it, many urban structures have been preserved to this day. At that time, all of Alanya comfortably fit on this mountain. Today, the old city has turned into an open-air museum covering an area of 10 hectares.
- At the very top is another inner fortress - Iç Kale. Local residents would move to it during sieges, storing provisions, water supplies, and ammunition.
- You can also spot the city's symbol, located at the mountain's base - the Red Tower. This octagonal structure has windows-slots and a large inner courtyard.
- It is hard to miss the minaret of the Suleymaniye Mosque, towering above the city. The mosque was first built in the 13th century by Sultan Ala ad-Din Kay-Kubad and was rebuilt in the 16th century by Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.
How to Prepare for Paragliding
- No special preparation is needed for a paraglider flight. You may want to bring a windbreaker or a warm sweater as it can be windy and cooler at the mountain's summit than at its base.
- Your shoes should be securely fastened on your feet.
